On 20th February 1915 the 4th Cameron Highlanders arrived in France where they joined 24 Brigade of 8th Division and went into the trenches for the first time on 28th February at Rue de Bacquerot near Laventie. Ralph Edwards was killed on 9th March but the battalion diary entry for that day simply reads, ‘No events of importance’. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
